China warned the United States that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas "risks getting out of control" and indicated that the "priority" must be to promote a ceasefire. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, to whom he commented that "the conflict in Gaza is increasing and risks spiraling out of control," according to the state newspaper Global Times. Furthermore, the diplomat stated that "China opposes any action that harms civilians and condemns any practice that opposes international law," in reference to a possible large-scale armed incursion into the Gaza Strip. "China believes that safeguarding one's own security should not come at the cost of harm to innocent civilians," the minister added, according to Europa Press. Likewise, Wang indicated that "a military solution is not an answer" because "responding to violence with violence only leads to a vicious circle." For this reason, he considered that the declaration of a ceasefire and the reduction of the crisis as soon as possible are the "immediate priorities" to avoid a worsening of the humanitarian crisis. And, he stated that his Government understands that "the fundamental solution to the Palestinian question lies in implementing the two-state solution, to establish an independent State of Palestine and achieve peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel." The new clashes were triggered after a bloody incursion by Hamas into Israeli territory last Saturday, with constant bombings on Gaza and the total blockade of the enclave ordered by Israel in response.
