The Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh announced that on January 1 they will dissolve the republic without international recognition that they created in the enclave, a week after Azerbaijan recovered the territory with a military offensive that forced the flight of more than half of its population. In a decree, Samvel Shajramanyan, leader of the Armenian-majority enclave located in southwestern Azerbaijan, announced the dissolution of "all government institutions and organizations (...) as of January 1, 2024," after he agreed to disarm its forces and hand over its weapons to Azerbaijan last week. This means that "the Nagorno Karabakh republic," known to Armenians as Artsakh and founded more than three decades ago, "ceases its existence," the decree added. In Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian said that, according to his forecasts, "in the coming days there will be no Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh," after some 70,000, more than half of the population, fled the enclave.
